Allergy Testing - Yuck!

Friday I had some allergy tests done. The Dr wanted them done to figure out which of 2 antibiotics I am allergic to. I got hives when I was getting off one antibiotic and going on another, so I haven't been able to take either. Well it seems that the penicillin testing kit has been recalled, so it's a little bit more involved to get tested.

So the Dr wanted us to go ahead with other allergy testing. It was NOT a fun test (26 back pricks and then 7 arm shots) . It turns out I am allergic to many things: mites, maple trees, grasses - including Bluegrass...hello Bluegrass State!, a few other grasses...and EGGS - yes eggs - yokes and whites. So the Dr wanted Mommy to perform a controlled test to see if I would break out in hives...this just gets better and better. Since I won't eat scrambled eggs or Cesar salad dressing I think Mommy has been sneaking raw eggs into my other foods...like chocolate milk shakes, and some of my bottles with milk look suspiciously yellow! So far no reactions - the Pediatrician said that sometimes the tests are very sensitive. It would be very bad to be allergic to raw eggs - a lot of the vaccines are based on raw eggs so that would mean that either I couldn't take them or I will have to be watched closely for reactions.

The Allergy Doc also thinks I have had an ongoing sinus infection that gets a little better with antibiotics but doesn't go away. So he wants me to come back in to test Omicef (an antibiotic) to see if I am allergic to it...its another 3 hour test - I am not looking forward to it. If I am not allergic to it he will probably put me on this for 1 month. Also, he gave me a decongestant and nasonex that I have to take everyday - PLUS in 2 weeks I have to get weekly allergy shots. With the things that I am allergic to the Doc says that I will have spring and fall allergies.

Hmmm...sometimes ignorance is bliss...
